Methodology · which ruling we follow, and why

We don't claim it's halal.
We name whose ruling we follow.

Scholars differ on whether crypto assets are permissible in themselves. Saying otherwise would be the first dishonest sentence on this site. So here is the camp we follow, the scholars we cite, the four uses that would disqualify us — and the two questions we have not resolved.

The reasoning, in four steps

Each step rests on the one before it.

The ruling we follow

Crypto takes the ruling of money.

“The juristic concept of money applies to cryptocurrencies as a medium of exchange recognised by contemporary custom. Consequently, dealing in them is permissible under Sharia, and they fall under all rulings governing money in Islamic jurisprudence — in earning, spending and consumption.”
Prof. Dr. Qutb Mustafa Sano · former Deputy Secretary-General, International Islamic Fiqh Academy

A second scholar, Dr. Mu'taz Abu Jaib, reaches the same conclusion independently: payment tokens take the ruling of money, on the condition that the coin's own project is lawful.

What that means for a trading system, stated carefully: if these assets are money, exchanging them is ṣarf — currency exchange — which is permissible, and has been for as long as money-changers have existed. But permissible as ṣarf means subject to ṣarf's conditions: immediate possession of both sides, no deferred settlement, and equal-for-equal where the two sides are the same genus. We do not say "inherently permissible." We say permissible as ṣarf, subject to the conditions of ṣarf, where the use is lawful.

The condition · tap each card

Money's ruling does not bless every use.

The same scholar names four uses that remain unlawful no matter what the asset is: gambling, forgery, fraud and manipulation. That is the sentence our whole design answers. Each card below is one of his four, and behind it is what we built so it cannot happen here.

Unresolved

Two questions we have not answered.

Open · venue

Does trading spot on a derivatives-heavy venue implicate us in what else happens there?

Our transactions are spot and our fee contribution is measured and published — roughly 0.4 basis points of our own traded value. We do not claim smallness settles a question of cooperation. It is with scholars, not with us.

Open · ṣarf

May two different dollar-pegged stablecoins be exchanged at anything other than par?

If they are one genus of money, equal-for-equal binds and the answer is no. Until a scholar rules, the machine does not make that trade at all — the pair is excluded by construction, not by preference.

Where we differ

Our universe follows one board, CryptoHalal, and is stricter than it where we choose to be; 19 of our 21 coins carry its permitted rating, two are unrated and not traded.

Certified halal screens permit coins we refuse. We are not saying they are wrong — we are saying our methodology is narrower, and that a profile may only ever be narrower than the camp it declares, never broader. Four examples we exclude and they allow: a memecoin with no project behind it, which fails the lawful-project condition; and privacy coins, whose dominant use raises the very question the fourth card answers.

The honest block

This page cites published scholarship; it is not a fatwa, and no scholar has certified NURON. We hold no certification, our live record is short, and the two questions above are open. We would rather you learn that here than find it later.
